Harness Racing

All race entries must be in by 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, the week of the fair.  Entry Fee: $20.00

Experience the excitement of harness racing at the Vernon County Fair! Harness racing is a unique form of horse racing where Standardbred horses compete while pulling a lightweight two-wheeled cart called a sulky, occupied by a driver. Horses race at one of two specific gaits: the trot, where opposite front and rear legs move together, or the pace, where both legs on the same side of the body move in unison.

At the Vernon County Fair, races are held on our half-mile track, meaning competitors complete two laps to cover the traditional one-mile race distance. Developed in the United States during the 19th century, Standardbreds are known for their speed, stamina, and smooth, consistent gait, making harness racing an exciting tradition for fairgoers of all ages.
